Cable-rail composite deck in Aurora with a Front Range view

Built for SE Aurora

An Aurora deck isn't a flatland deck.

We've built from the lake lots in Southshore to the golf lots in Blackstone — and the ground out here doesn't forgive shortcuts. The SE Aurora suburbs sit up around 6,000 feet, on clay that swells up when it gets wet, under strong sun and the hail this part of Colorado is known for.

Decks fail here in the same three ways: the clay pushes the posts up and pulls the deck off the house, the sun fades and cracks cheap boards in a couple summers, and tall railings block the reservoir or Front Range view you moved out here for. We build so yours doesn't do any of those.

  • We dig the posts down deep, about three feet, past the clay to solid ground — so a wet spring can't push your deck up.
  • Low-maintenance capped composite (TimberTech and Deckorators), so you're not re-staining wood every couple summers.
  • Thin cable or metal railing on the view lots near the reservoir and in Tallyn's Reach — so you keep your view of the Front Range.
  • Decks that step down to the yard on the walkout lots — not one tall deck you need a long flight of stairs to leave.

“After researching several local companies, they were the clear winner. The quality far exceeded the cost — craftsmanship in every square inch.”

Built for Aurora conditions

The details that make an Aurora deck last.

Most deck failures here trace back to the soil, the sun, or a skipped permit. We build for all three.

Clay that lifts decks

The clay under SE Aurora swells up when it gets wet. That's what pushes a deck up and pulls it off the house. We dig the posts down deep, about three feet, to solid ground, so a wet spring can't lift it.

Snow and freeze-thaw

We size the frame for Aurora snow, and for the way it freezes cold at night and thaws by day. That back-and-forth slowly loosens the screws on a deck built for warmer places.

Strong sun and Hail Alley

The Front Range sits in what folks call Hail Alley, and the sun out here is hard on cheap boards. We use tougher capped composite and build covered decks for folks tired of fixing hail damage.

City permit and HOA approval

The City of Aurora runs its own building office (303-739-7420) and permits the whole city — not the county. Your HOA in Blackstone, Southshore or Saddle Rock has to say yes first. We pull the permit and fill out the HOA form for you.

What we see in Aurora yards

The Aurora deck calls all start to rhyme.

After a few hundred Front Range builds, the deck requests from SE Aurora are predictable in the best way. Odds are yours is on this list — and we've already solved it.

Walkout-basement decks

The SE Aurora suburbs are full of walkout lots, where the main floor sits a full story above the backyard. We build decks that step down, level by level, to the yard — not one tall deck you need a long flight of stairs to get off of.

Saving the view

On the higher lots in Tallyn's Reach and the homes near the Aurora Reservoir, you can see the Front Range and even Pikes Peak. We use thin cable or metal railing so the railing almost disappears — and the view doesn't.

Decks that match a view fence

On golf or reservoir lots in Blackstone, Southshore and Beacon Point, the city wants an open iron view fence at the back. We build your deck and railing to match it, so the whole back of the yard looks like one design.

Done patching after the hail

If you've had to replace a deck board or a roof after a storm, you're not alone out here. We build covered decks and pergolas, and use tougher boards, so the next big hail doesn't start it all over.

HOA design-review builds

In Aurora your HOA approves the plans, materials and colors before the city will permit. Southshore even tells you which stains are allowed. We've done that paperwork before and handle it for you.

Big outdoor-living decks

A lot of folks here want more than a deck — a deck with a covered area, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire feature, all built at once. One crew, one schedule, and it all matches when we're done.

Aurora deck questions

What homeowners ask us.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Aurora?
Yes. You need a city permit for a deck in Aurora. The City of Aurora runs its own building office (303-739-7420) and permits the whole city — not the county. We pull the permit for you and take care of the inspections.
Does my HOA have to approve it?
Yes. In Aurora your HOA has to approve the plans, materials and colors before the city will give you a permit. Blackstone, Southshore, Saddle Rock and Tallyn's Reach each have their own committee. We fill out the paperwork for you.
How do you keep an Aurora deck from shifting in the clay?
The clay under SE Aurora swells up when it gets wet. We dig the posts down deep, about three feet, past the clay to solid ground, and seal the deck to the house the right way — so a wet spring doesn't push it up off the house.
What decking holds up best out here?
The strong sun and hail are hard on wood. We mostly use capped composite boards (TimberTech and Deckorators) that won't fade, crack, or splinter — or cedar if you want the natural wood look.
Can you keep my reservoir or Front Range view open?
Yes. Thin cable or metal railing keeps your view of the reservoir and the Front Range open and still passes the rules. It's a big reason the homeowners near the Aurora Reservoir and in Tallyn's Reach call us.
How long does an Aurora deck take?
Most decks here take one to three weeks to build, once the design is set and the city and HOA say yes. You get a real schedule up front and a crew that shows up when we said — that's behind a lot of our reviews.
